Improving credit and debit card security
There has been a lot of attention devoted to online fraud issues recently, however it is also important to be aware of credit and debit card security. The following guidelines can help you prevent unauthorised access to your accounts.
- When you receive a new credit or debit card make sure you sign it straight away.
- If your new card or PIN notification does not arrive in the post within ten working days make sure you notify Nurses First immediately.
- Always keep your card with you and never leave it unattended where it could be easily accessible to someone else.
- Make sure that your card is in sight during EFTPOS transactions and check that you are paying the correct amount for your purchases on the EFTPOS machine display screen.
- When using an ATM make sure that nobody is watching your transaction and be discreet when withdrawing cash. Also make sure you take your ATM receipt or place it in the secure bin provided beneath the ATM.
- If you suspect the ATM that you are using is damaged or has been interfered with, cancel your transaction immediately and inform the financial institution.
- It is important to memorise your PIN and never carry it with your card. Don't use the same PIN for all of your cards and never tell anyone your PIN.
- Check your receipts to make sure you have been charged the correct amount for your purchases and keep copies of your receipts and ATM slips in a safe place to reference against your statement.
- Always check your bank statements to make sure all of the listed purchases, withdrawals and transfers are correct and are your own transactions. If you do not recognise a transaction or find an error, contact Nurses First.
- Never provide your credit card number over the telephone or online unless you are sure you are dealing with a reputable company. If in doubt, ask for further details of the company and make sure they are legitimate before providing your credit card number.
- When making a credit card purchase over the phone be aware of anyone around you who might be able to hear your details.
- Notify Nurses First immediately on 13 25 77 if your card is lost or stolen or you suspect someone has accessed your account without authorisation. If you have lost your VISA debit card outside of business hours you can also contact VISA Global Customer Assistance on 1800 450 346.
- Make sure you cut up or destroy your old or unused credit and debit cards.
